About Larimar Kitchens

Dedicated to Customer Service

YFD Cabinetry was founded by José and Cristina Mata as a manufacturer devoted to designing and installing kitchen cabinets and bathroom vanities in condominiums and apartments and other commercial millwork. Demand for their workmanship, quality of materials, design flexibility and dedication to satisfying their customer’s requirements led to their opening their showroom to residential customers under the Larimar brand.

The Story of Larimar

Larimar is a semi-precious stone, a rare blue variety of the mineral pectolite found only in Barahona Province on the southern coast of the Dominican Republic, our native country. The name "larimar" was bestowed by Miguel Mendez, rediscoverer of the stone, for his daughter Larissa, and mar, Spanish for sea, for the colors of the shallow waters of the Caribbean near where it was found in 1974 in outcrops of the Bahoruco Range.

Larimar’s coloring is typically a light blue, but it ranges from white to deep blue and blue-green, derived from its copper content. It is made into jewelry in the Dominican Republic, usually set in silver, and the pendant shown here was the source for our web-page banner.
